What is Mindfulness Morocco? The new trend of mindfulness, even in Morocco?

Mindfulness is a new trend nowadays. We hear it everywhere, right? But why do we use that term for everything and anything?

Mindful walking, mindful eating, mindful communication, mindful parenting, mindful teenagers., and now Mindfulness Morocco?

Is Morocco getting the Mindful bug too?

Yes, it has, but it is not a new concept, as it is as old as the Moroccan language.

Mindfulness is simply "Awareness," being aware that we are here, aware of our thoughts, emotions, and different states of mind.

So when did this movement start?

Mindfulness originated in the East, thanks to the American pioneer John Kabat Zin, who brought this concept to the West. He founded the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program, which adapted mindfulness practices for a secular audience and healthcare settings. MBSR bridged the gap between Eastern traditions and Western medicine.

Scientific Exploration: The scientific community began exploring the potential benefits of mindfulness for stress reduction, anxiety, and other mental health concerns.

But what is that to do with Morocco?

Born in Morocco, I grew up speaking Darija, a fascinating language woven from threads of Amazigh (the native Berber tongue), Arabic, French, and Spanish. Morocco's unique position as a gateway between Africa and Europe has made it a crossroads for centuries, attracting travellers and merchants from all over. This rich history is reflected in the vibrant tapestry of Darija itself.

Morocco was a French and Spanish colony, and the attitude towards modernisation and Europeanisation have taken its toll on the Moroccan language, so our dialect started to be put on the side, and the wisdom of our language started to disappear.

Mindfulness Morocco is bringing awareness to Moroccans in their dialect, especially to our children who are used to French and English.

Here are a few examples:

لكل نهار نهارو Each day is different
Each hour is different
I am grateful to be healthy
I am grateful to have a family
I am grateful for all I have
Whatever God brings is welcome
It has good in it
Let it be in the hands of God
You will walk only in the path chosen by God
Whoever is older than you by one night, he or she has a skill more than you

Mindfulness is not New but as Old as humans

Mindfulness has deep roots that stretch back centuries. Ancient societies across the globe recognized the power of turning inward to cultivate inner peace and presence. Practices that encouraged focused attention, self-reflection, and a deep connection to the present moment were woven into the fabric of daily life. These traditions passed down through generations, emphasized the importance of mental and emotional well-being, recognizing that true contentment comes from finding stillness and awareness within ourselves.

Dhikr: In Islam, Dhikr is a spiritual practice of remembering God (Allah). This remembrance can involve repetitive chanting, prayer, or simply focusing on the divine presence in everyday moments. Dhikr shares similarities with mindfulness meditation in its emphasis on present-moment awareness and inner peace.

So what is Mindfulness Morocco?

Mindfulness Morocco is more than just mindfulness; it's a revival of our traditions and a return to the wisdom of our ancestors. It's about appreciating the present moment and recognizing the vital role of language in preserving our culture. If we abandon our traditions, we abandon a rich history of knowledge. That's why I'm dedicated to instilling compassion, kindness, and gratitude in the hearts of the next generation.
